Boys Varsity Basketball · Hornets claim District 3AA Championship in dramatic fashion

Twice in the regular season the Hornets had Union County on the ropes and twice a win against the Patriots slipped past the Hornets. New season, tournament time, and the Hornets again saw Union County in the district championship game. Carter raced out to an early lead of 16 only to see the Patriot shooters heat up and erase the lead. Union County took the lead late in the game with a floater, but Junior Preston McNew stepped to the line to give the Hornets the lead back by 1. Union County raced down and their ace Regular season MVP Barron Nease hit a runner to give Union County the lead with only 3 seconds left. Following a timeout Carter turned the ball over. Carter fouled and Union County converted on 1 of 2 free throws. Again Carter would make a long outlet pass to mid court and a Union County foul would be called against Carter’s McNew and again McNew would toe the line and drain both shots to tie the game and send it to overtime. In overtime Carter would wrestle the momentum away and out score the Patriots 15-5, to seal the Championship.

Named to the All-Tournament team from Carter was Ty Hurst, Gabe Harper, Preston McNew and the Most Valuable Player was Senior Trey Prater. The Hornets will play at home in Jim Williams Gymnasium Saturday 7pm against a very good Scott High squad.
